LEGAL BACKGROUND
The history of occupational health and safety in Germany began in the 19th century, when industrialization brought with it serious accidents at work. The introduction of statutory accident insurance in 1884 was a first step towards mitigating these consequences. Later, the focus shifted to prevention, which led to stricter occupational health and safety laws, such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act (ArbSchG) of 1996, which obliges employers to systematically minimize hazards.
The effect of these measures is clear to see: while over 6,000 fatal accidents at work were reported every year in the 1950s, the figure today is less than 400 – a great success for safety and prevention.
The task of the occupational safety specialist can also be assigned to an external expert.
